MFAC was elated to launch its inaugural Expect Miracles Awards at the 17th annual Mutual Fund Industry Awards Gala, hosted by Institutional Investors News at the Mandarin Oriental in NYC on April 15th. The nonprofit was also selected as “Charity of Choice” for a fourth year in a row.
MFAC’s goal for the Expect Miracles Awards is to recognize individuals and firms within the financial community for their outstanding support and commitment to the fight against cancer.
The night was filled with excitement as Chairman Frank Strauss announced the Individual Expect Miracles Awards including; the Inspirational Contributor Award and the Miracles Maker Leadership Award (see below for winners and nominees).
In addition, Executive Director Christina Thirkell announced the Corporate Awards. Nominees included: Interactive Data Corp, MFS Investments and American Century. The Corporate Commitment Award was received by MFS Investments, and the Company for a Cure Award was given to American Century Investments. But the pinnacle of the evening was when she announced a much-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award to James E. Stowers Jr., founder and Chairman of American Century Investments.

"It is particularly gratifying to see our founder Jim Stowers recognized for his support for research that could lead to cures for cancer and other devastating diseases. His generosity and selflessness continue to inspire the client-centric culture that has been the hallmark of American Century Investments for the past 50 years."
The Lifetime Achievement Award will be named the James E Stowers’ Lifetime Achievement Award and will set forth to honor those in the future who have dedicated their life to eradicating cancer.
Recognizes an individual at an executive or board level who has demonstrated long-standing personal leadership in cancer advocacy.
Mr. Garil has had a long and successful career in the mutual fund industry, beginning with his tenure at the Securities and Exchange Commission. His two children -- Michael and Stacey -- have waged personal battles with the disease. Much of Mr. Garil’s work is in their memory including establishing the Michael J. Garil Leukemia Survivors Program at Johns Hopkins to assist and support cancer survivors who have undergone aggressive treatments. In addition he is a donor and supporter of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Mr. Bucvalas helped to create and for many years run the Christina Mihos Tournament for Life which has raised $1.4 million over the past 16 years. The tournament is held in memory of Paul’s niece, Christina Mihos, who died of brain cancer in 1992 at the age of 17.
Mr. Gillen created the James B. Gillen Thoracic Oncology Research Fund in honor of his father. He served as Dana-Farber Leadership Council co-chair 2001-2006 and has been an active participant in the Dana-Farber Leadership Council Golf Tournament and the Jimmy Fund Walk since 2004.
Mr. Enos founded the Bill Blackwell Foundation. For 15 years,Gary has organized annual golf tournaments that have raised over$500,000 for The Jimmy Fund, the Lymphoma and Leukemia Foundation, and Mutual Funds Against Cancer. Gary also is board member of Mutual Funds Against Cancer.
Recognizes an individual whose personal efforts helped to ensure the success of a cancer-related project, event, or fundraising initiative in 2009.
For 14 years Maureen has run the “Friends of Jill Leary” Golf Tournament held in memory of her sister in-law Jill Leary who died of breast cancer at the age of 32. She also leads a team of walkers in the annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”. In 2009, she was the number one fundraiser in New England and the number three fundraiser nationwide raising over $43,000.
In 2009 Mr. Chastain founded Voices of Hope, a theater production that raised $30,000. The show featured inspirational musical performances entwined with personal stories of cast members who had been impacted by cancer. In 2010 Greg is taking Voicesof Hope to Boston’s Symphony Hall where his goal is to raise$100,000 for cancer research.
Mr. Gregory is a leading advocate in the war on cancer within hisfirm, Lord Abbett. He has also been a generous individual supporterof Mutual Funds Against Cancer for many years.
In 2001, Jennifer formed the “Friends of Jenn’s”. Since then, almost 1,400 people have participated on this team in the Susan G. Koman St. Louis Race for the Cure. This 10-year cancer survivor has thrown Cinco de Mayo parties, held Texas Hold Em Games and sold countless baked goods all to raise money in the battle against cancer.
Endowed with gifts from Jim and his wife Virginia totaling $2 billion, Jim founded the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in 1994. In 2000, the Institute welcomed its first research teams to the 10-acre, 600,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility. Today, approximately 500 researchers and scientists conduct basic research on the fundamental processes of cellular life. Jim has survived prostate cancer, his wife Virginia is a breast cancer survivor, and one of their daughters is battling cancer today. More than 40% of American Century Investments’ profits fund Stowers Institute research to help find cures for genetically based diseases including cancer.
