The mutual fund industry came out in force on July 25 to help Mutual Funds Against Cancer (MFAC) raise in excess of $265,000 for The Jimmy Fund. This year’s total was not only 30% higher than last year’s, but pushed MFAC over the $1 million mark in terms of funds raised since inception.

Event Highlights

Over 280 golfers representing over 70 mutual fund and financial services firms packed both courses at the Pinehills Golf Club. On the Jones course, playing their own ball and without handicap, the Source Media team of Harry Nikpour, David Keith, Larry Walsh, and Michael Simone successfully defended the title they won in 2005. On the Nicklaus course a State Street team comprised of Jimmy “the K” Keenan, Brian Donahue, John Fitch, and KC Clark won the net bramble format. Of course, the biggest winner on the day was the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute, the beneficiary of the event.

Following the golf tournament, the day was further highlighted by a banquet featuring live and silent auctions that raised over $30,000. Several special awards were presented at the banquet that was emceed by WEEI’s John Dennis. Paul Lincoln was awarded the Guardian Angel scholarship. The scholarship is given annually in memory of Paula Pearlstein.

Paul is a cancer survivor who will use the scholarship to continue his studies at St. Anselm. MFAC Board member Bruce Speca was awarded the Expect Miracles Award. Bruce, who was personally responsible for raising over $80,000 this year, became the first two–time winner of this prestigious award. Ken Michaud was awarded the CJ Award for his long–time commitment to MFAC. Ken and his brother Bruce, who own George H. Dean Co., have been sponsors of MFAC since the tournament began in 1995. A special CJ Award was also presented posthumously in the memory of Don DeMarco. Don, who lost his battle with cancer last December, was one of MFAC’s original committee members and a beloved member of the fund industry.
